Where have all the PICs gone?

Postby Roche » Wed Feb 09, 2022 3:48 pm

I went out to buy a hundred 18F24K22s the other day and they are all on next year delivery times. Looking about at alternatives, virtually every part number is on longish to very long leadtimes. I've already re-layed the board once to get around Texas power supply lead times; it's all getting a little tiresome...

Welcome to the world wide chip shortage.
At my work we have seen lead times blow out from days to many months.

The weird thing is that a lot of devices are available (just not PICs). It seems almost arbitrary as to which have shortages. If you are fleet of foot and can implement design changes quickly, you can skate around problem components. PICs just seem to be particularly bad, as do Texas parts. I haven't looked at AVRs yet, but I suspect they won't be great.
