SAM 5Ex, Switching mode vs Linear mode

SAM 5Ex, Switching mode vs Linear mode

Postby DominusDRR » Wed Mar 08, 2023 3:48 pm

Hi.

I am designing a prototype based on a SAME51J20A.

I have seen that there are 2 modes of operation of power consumption called Linear Mode and Switch mode.
In the data sheets it is not clearly explained what is the advantage of one mode over the other.

We are taking as a reference some of the development boards with that MCU and some at the hardware level are configured to work in one or the other mode, that is, some have the inductor connected between the VDDcore and VSW pins, and others do not.

The obvious advantage is not putting that inductor, but since I don't know much about that microcontroller yet, I'm not sure which option is better.

Any comment or suggestion is welcome.

Regards.
