Which forum style do you prefer?

Postby ric » Sun May 25, 2014 8:22 am

Select which style you prefer.

"Condensed" style just shows a list of all the sub-forums. They will be highlighted if any new posts have been added since you last read that forum.
Click on the forum title to show all sub forums in detail.
The [Development Tools] forum has been set up this way.

"Expanded" style shows all sub-forums in detail, one per line (i.e. #topics, #posts, last post).
The [Microcontroller Discussion Group] forum has been set up this way.

Well, how can I set the style to see how it appears?

You can't change them. I have set up one of each style as an example.
As shown in the poll questions, the "[Development Tools]" forum is using the "condensed" style,
and the "[Microcontroller Discussion Group]" is using the "expanded" style.

I'm not concerned with style or fancy features. That stuff is what made the microchip forum get broken.

The next step is to draw people, so posting this url on hack-a-day, dangerous prototypes, and sparkfun would be a good idea.

And there needs to be some recent posts, so people see it is alive and being read.

Hi Ric, thanks for putting up this forum.

I definitely like the expanded style better. The Discussion Group expanded list makes it easy to see what it there. The Development Tools example is all cramped and requires yet another mouse click (yucc) to see the information you'll likely always want to see anyway.

On a separate topic, while I'm typing here I don't see any way to preview the message. I always want to preview my posts to make sure they look as I intend them too. I feel kindof naked clicking "submit" without knowing what exactly it will look like. Also, where's a description of what kind of formatting we can use? I saw setting for enabling/disabling some sorf of markup, but I don't see any help link to get a description of the syntax. Those markups are all annoying anyway. Can we just insert basic HTML elements? Then we don't have to learn something new. I can see that only a subset of HTML would be allowed, but I think we'd only need basic stuff like center, ol, ul, dl, perhaps blockquote, etc.

Hi Olin...

If you click on "PostReply", then you get a preview button. If you click on "Quick Reply", then you don't. They assume if you are in that big of a hurry, why preview?

I cannot say that I can find pages that lokk different at all.
Could you post two URL:s, one for each type of style so I can find it.
Right now I have looked at some 15 pages and I can't see any difference.....

Ric is referring to how the two containers for forums are presented at the top level. Go to the "Board index" link at the top left corner of every page, and you will see the differences between the two styles right there. There are no differences at lower levels.

OK, the difference I see is that there is a panel named FORUM that contains one forum name [Development Tools] and below the name a text paragraph listing a large set of forum names.
Then the next panel is named MICROCONTROLLER DISCUSSION GROUP and here I see one line per subforum.
If the latter is the expanded view I like that better too.

But the topic should have been named:
"Which forum list style do you prefer"
That would have been easier to understand. I thought we were discussing how threads are displayed....
