Microchip acquired Atmel a while ago, but I don't see any integration happening, Two different websites, different tools, different parametric searches. Where is it going? Any thoughts?

The only difference I've seen is that our local Australian Microchip rep is now pushing Atmel parts as well.

And in typical Microchip fashion, multiple broken links to the Atmel parts on that page.

Looks like the results of the merger are more financial rather than technological, at least in the 8-bit area. They only created a monopoly for 8-bit MCUs. They don't seem to add Atmel ideas to PICs and vice versa. May be it takes more time though ...

I just noticed, the MAPS selector ( http://www.microchip.com/maps/microcontroller.aspx ) now includes ATtiny products...

Looks like these are new ATTINY, which appeared already under Microchip supervision.

It's been less than a year since the acquisition announcement, so I'm not surprised. I imagine most of the original Atmel employees are still in Norway, while the original Microchip employees are in Arizona. Most of Microchip's big customers would probably prefer that the existing 8-bit toolchains be properly maintained instead of spending resources on making a new toolchain. You can use a PICkit 2 to program AVRs but that didn't have anything to do with the merger :D.

Hey, look, I just saw that this issue of Microchip Solutions is talking about how they are coming out with new AVRs and PICs that have the same peripherals in them:

They are called "Core Independent Peripherals". See the article page 6.
