Has anyone successfully got the character echo demo code to work on this demo board?

This is the 16-Bit 28Pin Starter Demo Board (DM300027).

I have not been successful in getting anything to work on this board except blink the LEDs.
I can successfully change code and change blink frequency, but that's it.

Can't debug and the UART echo code doesn't work.

Any help?

Does the com port appear on your PC?
Using an oscilloscope can you see data on pin 18 of the 16bit device?
If you remove the device from the socket and loop pin 18 of the socket to pin 19 of the socket, does it echo?
