Synchronous means that you have an additional clock signal (and PIN) -> So, you should use asynchronous.
Why do you want to *delay* the "stop" bit ?
Writing is usually done by:
1. check if TXREG is free (wait until)
2. put new value in
Reading is done:
1. check if value is in RCREG
2. read it
