In a typical application, you don't need to worry about linker files; the linker will find the right file automatically.

Dimebag,

It would be wise to go with the latest develpment software since you are just starting out. The mplab and C18 are a dead end. Get the mplabx and the xc8 compiler. That's the future.

People still use mplab and c18 because they used it for many years and haven't migrated over yet. If you start with the obsolete software, you will also have to go through the migration pain, but for no reason.

OTOH if you need to check existing C18 code that you have found works before converting it to XC8, you need it installed and there is more C18 code out there than HiTech or XC8 PIC18 code. C18 is usable, but its sucky, frequently non-ANSI compliant and frequently makes your life more difficult than it needs to be. *DONT* start new projects in C18, but *DO* have both installed.

I have installed the XC2 complier. I would like to thank Tom for the very helpful comments he has made. I would also like to thank all of you for your guidance. I will take a couple of weeks to read over the notes and start some simple programs.
