XC-8 Pro?

Postby SLTom992 » Tue Jun 10, 2014 10:03 pm

I've just been reading the forum (which finally came back on the air since early this morning) and the XC-8 Pro version requiring to be repurchased every year if there are any upgrades that you want.

Personally I'm not against additional pricing for a compiler with up-grades but this is not cheap if you're using multiple MicroChip PIC components.

I suppose the question is - what do you think an upgrade is worth and do they tell you what has been upgraded so that you can see if it's something that might effect the sorts of programs you write?

Discussion?

The compiler's README and/or release notes document the changes. There's probably not a compelling case for upgrading every year unless you need support for new PICs.

Google the release notes and read them over to see if there is anything worthy of upgrade.

"xc8 1.32 release notes"

I'm very reluctant to upgrade if I already have what I need, so the release notes need to really contain some attractive to get me to hop to a new lily pad.

Upgrades often bring new bugs which chew up time sorting out.
