I should note that I pointed out the need to drive both ends of the coil to the same level and let the current decay in Bob's original topic (@MCHP) over two months ago! http://www.microchip.com/forums/FindPost/788836

Just to check back:
I modified the firmware of the switch board such that on switching OFF the coil I change the individual relay drive line to the same state as the common line drive.
Then I let it sit for about 0.5 ms before I tristate the pins.
This has completely removed the transient that was present before.
